Day 5 - Through the eye of the needle

Thank goodness for Dr Beeching; how pleased were we to find that instead of cycling over the Mendips we could cycle through a tunnel on the old Strawberry Line? We cycled past Cadbury's Garden Centre, but when we saw Roundtree's we just had to stop for tea and cake. A less hilly day today, but with achy legs every molehill felt like a mountain. We crossed the Avonmouth - those watching our tracker may have seen us cycling along the M5, before being delayed by a mechanical failure! Louise found a local internet only bike shop (Monterey cycles), but a bit of sweet talking got her a free repair! We then crossed the Severn alongside the M4, and could feel the whole bridge vibrating under our feet when a lorry went past. It took us a while to get off the bridge as Louise kept wanting to wait for another lorry!

We pressed on to Tintern, and enjoyed a 3 mile downhill run, before arriving at our B&B. Looking forward to our day off tomorrow.

Planned miles: 56

  2. I think you'll find it was Doctor Beeching.

Doctor Beecham invented Powders, not railway closures, or so I believe...
